Volunteer with us

Would you like to join our Volunteering team and help keep the stories of the Shropshire Soldiers alive? If you share our passion for History and the Heritage of the Shropshire Soldiers, this could be the volunteering opportunity you’ve been looking for!

Whether you can give minutes, hours or days as a Volunteer, you will still make an enormous difference…

Our current volunteer opportunities:

  • Research Team – Discover the histories of Shropshire Soldiers, combing our Collection database and records from the National Archives – you will play a crucial role in helping families discover their ancestors’ place in the Shropshire Regiments and their roles in forging world history. You’ll need attention to details and an inquisitive nature. Knowing your way around a PC and Internet searches will come in very useful too…
  • Archive and Collections Team – With over 16000 objects on our collections database, our Archive and Collections Team play an incredibly important role in ensuring everything is where it should be and in the superb condition to be viewed by our visitors. A basic knowledge of collections care and museum practice would be great but we can teach you and walk you through the process if you bring your energy!
  • Exhibition and Interpretation Volunteers – Researching our collections and interpreting newly found information is a key part of the Museum’s development – and the Exhibition and Interpretation Volunteers enable us to share this with our visitors to bring them the most up-to-date experience. This role also includes writing for our website so if you are keen to mix your passion for history with developing your writing skills, this is definitely a role for you.
  • Presentation Team – If you have great DIY skills, need an outlet for creative problem solving and can recognise and exercise high standards of presentation, you’ll enjoy being part of this team: Every other Thursday, whilst we are closed to the public, these volunteers run audits on the presentation of our displays, and clean/polish/titivate until we’re looking spotless once again.

To join our teams, or to talk about a volunteering role we might not have thought of yet, please contact the museum.

The application form is  below

  • Please note: We will use this to contact you, send you volunteer newsletters and information about volunteer opportunities or projects we need help with. The Museum will also add you to its general mailing list for events, from which you will have the opportunity to unsubscribe at any time.
  • Additional Information

  • If you are from the UK you are free to volunteer. The majority of European Union (EU) citizens are free to volunteer within the UK.
  • References

  • We want to provide volunteers, staff and our visitors with a safe, reliable and fun experience. The purpose of asking volunteers for a reference is to make sure we know what to expect, and that you are genuine in your search for a role. Please provide details of two referees to support your application, bearing in mind that we will contact them soon after your application is received. If you can provide e-mail addresses for your referees, this will greatly speed up the application process.

Please don’t put relatives as your referees; however, people such as ex-employers, people you may have volunteered for in the past, a social worker or anyone you have a professional relationship with are fine. One of your referees can be a friend, someone you have worked with, or a fellow volunteer.

If you have any reservations about giving details of referees, or our referencing process, please get in touch with us.
